This weekend, Miroslaw Balka unveils a new site-specific sculpture, "red nerve", at Castello di Ama in Siena, Italy.

For the installation, Balka has suspended a single red thread in a cantina form ceiling to floor. This simple gesture is complicated by a turning mechanism that causes the thread to twitch and stir in the air. Coupled with its anatomical title, this installation points towards one’s tenuous existence within the darkness of the surrounding architecture.

Balka’s installation marks the sixteenth addition to the series of permanent artworks realized for Castello di Ama.
