l’ Apparita

L’Apparita has enjoyed cult status right from its first vintage, 1985. Lying at the top of the Bellavista vineyard, at an elevation of 490 metres, is the collection of small parcels that make up the L’Apparita vineyard, a total of 3.84 hectares. It was planted to Canaiolo and Malvasia Bianca in 1975, but grafted over to clone 342 of Merlot between 1982 and 1985. Its open lyre training system and clay-rich soil make this small cru a true jewel in the international wine world.

Growing season weather conditions
The amount of rainfall in the first four months must be underscored: 317mm. Budbreak in the initial vines held to the norm. The summer months experienced high temperatures and a notable lack of rainfall, and only in September did some rain come, about 50mm for the month, which was providential for the ripening process in all of the varieties. Harvest of the early ripening varieties began at the start of September, followed by mid-month for Merlot, and finally at the end of the month for the traditional varieties.
Vinification and maturation
The grapes were picked on 14 September into small boxes then visually inspected on sorting tables. After de-stemming and a gentle pressing, the must fermented in stainless steel tanks, with regular pumpovers. The wine macerated on the skins almost four weeks, then went to barriques for malolactic fermentation. When completed, the wine was racked, the final blend assembled, and the wine returned to barriques, half new and half once-used, for about 18 months’ maturation.
The wine was bottled on 17 June 2011, producing 10,300 standard Bordeaux bottles, 750 magnums, and 200 double magnums.
Tasting Notes
A deep red, at the same time luminous and saturated. A rich wealth of wild red berryfruit immediately greets the nose, followed by a broad array of spice. After a sapid and appealing attack, the elegance of the tannins, supple and compelling, is striking, and the aromatic sensations on the nose reappear here in full. A well-integrated balanced of its components give this wine a far from normal pleasureableness.

2009 Wine Advocate USA 95/100

The 2009 L’Apparita (Merlot) wraps around the palate with layers of fruit. The more seamless side of Apparita is on display, yet at the same time there is plenty of tannin underpinning the fruit. Juicy dark cherries, plums, flowers and tobacco wrap around the finish. As always, L’Apparita is one of the more interesting Merlots in Tuscany. It is first and foremost a wine of Chianti Classico.

An elegant , Bordeaux –like style, offering cherry, black currant, cedar and floral notes. Balanced and harmonious, this needs a little time to absorb the moderate tannins. A hint of orange zest graces the finish. Merlot.

It is amazing how much a little decanting can do for the 2009 L’Apparita. Initially tight and reticent, the 2009 blossoms into a stunning, open, beautifully radiant wine that captivates all of the senses. I visited the estate in 2009, during the middle of a huge heat wave. I expected to find a much bigger wine, but ultimately, the 2009 is medium in body and all about finesse. This is a fabulous Apparita graced with exquisite aromatics and tons of pure class.
I imagine the 2009 will enjoy a broad drinking window, but like all Apparitas, the best comes with time.
