Ama, the art
Castello di Ama is an internationally acclaimed winery situated in a secluded 12th century hamlet in the heart of the Chianti Classico wine region near Siena. It was the idea of protecting and handing down Castello di Ama’s beauty and soul to future generations that led Lorenza and Marco Pallanti to create “Castello di Ama per l’Arte Contemporanea” (Castello di Ama for Contemporary Art). This art project consists of site-specific installations conceived and realized in dialogue with the spirit that the estate and ancient borgo emanate. From 1999 to 2014, working in collaboration with Galleria Continua, we invited the following artists to enrich the beauty of the place with their art: Michelangelo Pistoletto, Daniel Buren, Giulio Paolini, Kendell Geers, Anish Kapoor, Chen Zhen, Carlos Garaicoa, Cristina Iglesias, Nedko Solakov, Louise Bourgeois, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Pascale Marthine Tayou and Hiroshi Sugimoto. This is the meaning of our project: unique and authentic, inspired by the terroir just like our wines, and following the rhythm of the harvests. In 2015 Philip Larratt-Smith was appointed curator of the development of the project, and in October 2016 the first chapter in this collaboration it was : Topos (Excavated), a new permanent installation by the celebrated Korean artist Lee Ufan. With the opening of four elegant suites in the main villa and a Tuscan-style “Ristoro”, Castello di Ama is nowadays able to fulfill the desire of a total immersion in the serene beauty of one of the most charming corners of Italy.
